Written on the reef, not in a library
The story behind this book started long before the first version was written. In many ways, it was born from our battle against crown-of-thorns starfish, threats of climate change and from one girl from Finland who was eagerly looking for a way to save corals, one by one.
Since then, our purpose has been not only to restore corals, but also to learn, teach, experiment and innovate. Always trying to understand better what works, what does not, and how we can give reefs a better chance to recover.
It is written for people without a marine biology degree. Coral reefs, reef ecology, coral identification and coral restoration are all huge topics and it is not easy to fit everything into one clear and practical guide.
I have organised the guide around the subjects I believe are most useful for understanding corals, how reefs function and why they are so important. We will begin with the basics before moving into coral growth, identification, reef ecology, threats and restoration.
This book is not meant to be a complete scientific reference. It is a practical guide created by a diver and coral reef gardener who is still learning every day and who wants to share that knowledge with others who care about protecting coral reefs.
